What is a Totem?

The word totem is believed to be derived from the Ojibwe word odoodem which means “his kinship group”. There are many types of totems in the Native American cultures and vary from group to group. Basically in lay terms it is usually an animal that you feel a particular kinship to. Every person is born with a particular birth animal totem that is determined by the Moon you are born under. Your birth totem is your moon sign not to be confused with the sun sign which is your Zodiac sign.
